Aug. 4, 2010 -- The worst flooding in 80 years along the Indus River in northwest Pakistan has killed at least 1,500 people and left over a million homeless.

Flooding from summer monsoonal rains are common in the region. But a comparison between satellite images of the Indus taken by NASA's Terra satellite on July 31, 2010 (above) and Aug. 1, 2009 (below) show how much worse things are this time around. Last year's braided stream beds are submerged, a sinuous line of standing water extends to the northwest, and a tributary river to the east is swollen dramatically.
