On August 5 of this year, in the midst of some of the worst monsoon rains the country has ever seen, this was the scene:
It's hard to overstate devastation of this magnitude. The United Nations now estimates that 20 million people have been affected by what Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called a "slow-motion tsunami."
The weather is expected to improve over the next few days, but flood waters remain high, and outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and other diseases threaten the vulnerable population.
