As if last week's show-stopping images of the Eyjafjajokull volcano erupting in Iceland weren't enough, some kind soul has set up a camera a few clicks out from the volcano and is streaming video for all to see!
This is much better than the usual herky-jerky webcam, which takes a picture every minute or so. You can watch the fiery vent simmer, and its steam plume waft away in the breeze (click on the picture to access the stream):
When I snapped this screenshot, Eyjafjajokull was looking pretty mild-mannered (it's the dark hump on the right, emitting just a faint trail of smoke), but apparently it was all aglow yesterday, and spat out some spectacular fire fountains overnight. Also, eruptions here have a tendency to trigger more explosive, damaging blasts from the Karla volcano, which is nearby and situated under the Myrdalsjokull ice cap. If that happens, the area could be in for severe flooding from glacial melting.
So far all, is quiet. As of this writing, it's getting late in Iceland and it looks close to sunset, so stay tuned -- the fireworks may be just around the corner.
