May 11, 2010 -- Experts say this gray whale is the first seen in the Atlantic Ocean in hundreds of years.

There have been no gray whales in the Atlantic since the eighteenth century, when they were essentially hunted to extinction in that body of water.

This gray whale was spotted off the coast of Israel recently. Scientists speculate that it ended up there by navigating through a melted Northwest Passage. Then it followed its usual route, which this time happened to be in another ocean than the Pacific, where the rest of the world's gray whales live.
