Jan. 8, 2012 --The wreck of the Greek cargo ship, Rena, split in two this weekend, dumping sea containers and debris and sparking fears of a fresh oil spill. In this Jan. 8, 2012 photo the broken Rena is seen off Tauranga Harbor, New Zealand. The vessel cracked in two after being tossed around by rough seas.

The Greek-owned Rena ran aground on a reef 14 miles from Tauranga Harbor on Oct. 5, 2011, releasing heavy fuel oil into the seas, coating pristine beaches in oil and killing up to 20,000 sea birds in what has been described as New Zealand's worst maritime environmental disaster. Despite salvage efforts nearly 400 tons of oil remained aboard -- and now may be released into the ocean.
