The market for electric cars is growing, but their mileage has stayed steady at about 80 miles, which will keep them from being a commuter’s best friend. Swiss automotive modifier Rinspeed is showing off a concept mobility system, Dock+Go, at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show. It works like a single-axle backpack for electric vehicles to increase battery life and extend their range. It can also extend mileage by adding a combustion engine or batteries powered by a fuel cell.

Aside from a mileage boost, the Dock+Go can also provide extra carrying capacity, especially for the unsung hero of late-night cravings, the pizza guy. The company envisions an integrated heating work box to keep pizzas warm, as well as recreational packs to personalize the modular system. It’s a neat concept that could just end up being an inane accessory once EV charging stations become more accessible around the country. However, in a smart car, that extra cargo space could be what makes it worth the funny looks it will get on the highway.
