If you didn’t know this by now, Mercedes-Benz seat belts are different from most. They have a pyrotechnic system that is motorized to adjust tension after buckled for safety and comfort. The company is adding even more nifty features to the seemingly simple safety belt by making them retractable. For rear seat passengers, the “active seat-belt” motorized buckle will extend out 2.75 inches when their door is opened and its slot will illuminate. Which is very intriguing. What better way to get back seat riders to wear their seat belts than catching their attention with a red light? Okay, maybe an alarm, but still, the red light is a great touch.

Once the belt is buckled, it will retract to prevent slack in the lower hip, which lowers the risk of the passenger’s pelvis slipping through the belt. This feature is a part of the brand’s PRE-SAFE preventive safety system, which becomes active in dangerous driving situations. The active seat-belt system is currently under development and should be implemented in new models soon, although Autoblog is speculating it will be seen in the 2013 S-Class.
