The AC Cobra, aka the Shelby on this side of the Atlantic, is another child of the golden age of the sports car, the 1960s. The Cobra was the product of a collaboration between American race car driver Carroll Shelby, Ford, which provided the slim V8 engine, and British AC Cars. The two door roadster’s good power to weight ratio and sprinting capability made it a star on the track in short races, but it didn’t fare as well in long distance competitions.
In 2007, a 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake, the descendant of the original Cobra, sold for $5.5 million, more than for any American car ever sold. Only two Super Snakes, featuring 800hp and a zero to 60mph time of of just over three seconds, were ever built.
