The small car, smart car division over at Daimler (home of Mercedes-Benz) has announced they will show the electrically driven forstars sport utility coupe concept at the Paris Motor Show Sept. 29-Oct. 14.
The “smart”-looking concept is bathed in alubeam rouge body paint to create an appealing contrast with the matte metallic titanium hue of the underlying tridion safety cell.
“The smart is Europe’s most inexpensive series-produced electric car,” smart boss Dr. Annette Winkler, says. “Not only is it emission-free and fast, it is also possible to conveniently set the perfect interior temperature in advance with a smartphone, and it is simple to charge at a domestic socket. What’s more, with its powerful battery and integrated projector the smart forstars can transform any grey backyard into an animated open-air cinema.”
The smart forstars is powered by the automaker’s fortwo BRABUS electric drive 60 kW magneto-electric motor powered by a 17.6 kW/hour lithium-ion battery pack for what smart describes as an agile and lively driving experience with powerful, lag-free acceleration.
forstars is a two-seater that boasts ample cargo space for beneath its glass tailgate and thanks to a projector and media player integrated into the front “bonnet” space is capable of turning any large, blank wall into an impromptu cinematic experience.
The exterior design is said to give a hint at smart’s future design idiom with forstars greeting the viewer with a “saucy smile” from its friendly, confident fascia.
The wheelbase of the concept is 603 mm longer than the current smart fortwo car and boasts a wider track as well (an additional 193 mm up front and 90 mm in the rear) and the vehicle is designed with very short overhangs both fore and aft with all four wheels pushed about as far out to the corners as a designer could take them. forstars rolls on 245/35 ZR 21 Michelin sport rubber on stylish three-spoke alloy wheels.
Overhead, forstars features a convex glass coupe roof that joins seamlessly to the glass cargo cover. The new concept shares many body features with the smart for-us concept unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January this year and like the for-us, forstars boasts an electrically-operated lower tailboard section.
Inside we find a blend of mother-of-pearl finished surfaces combined with technical functional elements being finished in brushed aluminum and the body color is also used as a accent in areas to create a link of sorts with the vehicle’s exterior.
The concept’s two seats are open-backed and covered with a soft fabric throw giving them an almost hammock-like feel and these can be removed to allow personalization or to accommodate longer items inside the cargo area.
And instead of a conventional rearview mirror, the smart forstars features a smartphone pulling double duty as it displays not only what lies behind via an integrated video camera but also serves as the media source for the built-in forward projecter mounted where a typical hood-mounted air scoop might be.
