When the Pope is on the road, he needs a vehicle that is fitting of his presence. That vehicle, has famously become known as the “popemobile.”
Originally introduced in 1978, popemobiles, like the one below, were open air affairs that allowed the pope to stand and greet onlookers as he was driven through the throngs.
After an assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981, however, the popemobile reinforced with bulletproof glass.
Now, the popemobile is getting upgraded once again. TreeHugger reports that the latest version—a gift from Renault—is luxurious, secure, and environmentally-friendly, too. Don’t miss the photos at TreeHugger.com.
