Are Google's Self-Driving Cars Ready for Prime Time?

When they were first introduced, Google’s self-driving cars seemed like an engineering novelty at best—and a futurist’s pipe dream at worst. Since then, however, the cars have been tirelessly logging test miles and now, after 300,000 miles without an accident, some think they are ready for the wild.

So, will you soon be seeing driverless cars on your local commute? Probably not. The test cars still have to prove themselves in a number of challenging situations, like snow-covered roads, before they could be considered street legal. Still, these early successes indicate that they may, indeed, be coming—and possibly even sooner than anyone expected.
