BMW's "The Ultimate Drive" app: Free
On the one hand, ubiquitous GPS has made it tougher for us to get lost. So the current generation may never find themselves misplaced in the countryside, requesting directions back to the highway and hearing such classic responses as: "From here?"; "You wanna know the quickest way?"; or the perennial favorite, "You can't get there from here." But on the other hand, BMW's new Android and iOS app, "The Ultimate Drive," takes advantage of social technology to make getting lost on purpose more fun.
The app helps you find, add and rate routes uploaded by fellow Beemer owners in over 50 countries. When you first start The Ultimate Drive, it walks you through a brief tutorial of how to navigate the maps, find stretches in your area and add new stretches with waypoints. With driving gloves fully adorned, you're ready to choose a stretch in your vicinity, based on either manually entering an address or letting your device automatically determine your location. Then it's off you go into the scenic world of tantalizing twisties and undulating ups and downs sure to get your heart racing.
