Ford Focus Electric: $39,995

The electric car is back! Even the company who created the monstrous Excursion SUV in 2000 seems to think so. Ford has started production on its Focus Electric, slated for 2012. Ford claims that the vehicle will break the 100-miles-per-gallon mark. The company hopes to compete (and beat) with the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi MiEV, all of which deliver over 85 MPGe.

What gives the new Focus an edge over competitors is its 6.6-kilowatt onboard charger. Homes that have 240-volt outlets will be able to recharge the battery in a little over three hours. In a pinch, an hour-long charge will give drivers another 30 miles. The EV version of the five-seater hatchback will be available early next year in California and in the New York and New Jersey area for $39,995. This vehicle will qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit and other state incentives.
