Just when police thought they’d reached a dead end in the case of the three missing zoo animals – a tiger and two camels –the investigation took another turn: All three animals were found alive and safe about 60 miles outside of Montreal.
I received an email from Dave Salmoni, Animal Planet’s big predator expert, early this morning letting me know that the stolen zoo animals, which I reported on yesterday, were found.
Jonas the tiger and camels Todd and Shawn went missing early on Friday after the trailer they were being transported in was stolen from a motel parking lot just outside of Montreal. The trio was en route to the Bowmanville Zoo, a private facility just outside of Toronto.
Not much information is being given about their rescue at this point. Stephanie MacEwan, the head keeper the Bowmanville Zoo, told Discovery News that the animals are back safe and in good condition. MacEwan says zoo veterinarians are carefully watching the animals today, just as a precaution, since they’ve been out of the zoo’s care for over 72 hours.
Animals experts worry when zoo animals, like these three, aren't in their constant care.
During the last four days, one of the biggest concerns for zoo staff was the fate of the three-year-old tiger Jonas. Tigers can’t survive long without water. The zoo feared if he had been dehydrated, he would die. MacEwan says this morning, Jonas seems “back to his normal self.” Camels, on the other hand, can survive a little longer without water.
On Wednesday, June 23, 2010 the Bowmanville Zoo will hold a press conference to release additional information about the case.
