Dolphin Dies After Being Hauled Ashore for Selfies

A young dolphin died of probable dehydration on a resort beach in Santa Teresita, Argentina, after beachgoers fetched the animal from the surf so it could be passed around for selfies, Sky News reports.

The animal, which was reportedly still being passed around even after it had died, was a La Plata (also known as Franciscana) dolphin. The species ranges along the Atlantic coast of southern Argentina and is considered vulnerable. Many of its kind are killed in fishing nets.

Dolphins Call Each Other By Name

When dolphins are kept too long out of the water, they can essentially overheat and quickly succumb to dehydration, as looks to have been the case for this juvenile.

The dolphin’s body was later cast aside on the beach.

“It is fundamental that people help to rescue these animals, because every Franciscana counts now,” warned the Argentina Wildlife Foundation, in a memo released to the public after the incident.
