May was born in Brooklyn, New York. He suffered from dyslexia, which never got in the way of his talents and goals. His motto was, "If you can dream it, you can achieve it." Throughout his lifetime, he had a passion for entertaining and educating children and their families about the "wonderment" of science, nature and other subjects.
He had quite a career even before his Walking with Dinosaurs work, doing everything from producing records for the Bee Gees' Barry Gibb to producing other acclaimed stage shows, such asThe Hobbit and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
May made his New York Broadway debut with Marilyn - An American Fable, the life story of Marilyn Monroe. He co-composed and co-wrote the West End Musical Always – the love story of King Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson.
Before May's death, his colleague Irving Azoff said, “Bill’s imagination will take audiences to places they could never have dreamed of.”
