True: A Dingo Ate The Baby: An Australian coroner has confirmed that in 1980 a dingo took 9-week-old Azaria Chamberlain, who would have turned 32 yesterday, away from her campsite near Ayers Rock, the red monolith in the Australian desert now known by its Aboriginal name Uluru. At the time of the incident Australians doubted a dingo was strong enough to drag a baby away, and such an attack was unheard of, but in recent years the wild dogs have fatally attacked three other children. In 1981, the first inquest into the case blamed the dingo for Azaria’s death. But a second inquest, in 1982, charged a pregnant Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton for the murder of her daughter, and she served more than three years in prison until a jacket found near a dingo den helped provide enough evidence to release her in 1986. A third inquest in 1995 suspended the sentence and ruled the cause of death uncertain. Meryl Streep made the case an international thriller with her 1988 movie “A Cry in the Dark.” Chamberlain-Creighton and her ex-husband, Michael Chamberlain have been fighting for the fourth inquest and their case was finally accepted for reexamination. On Tuesday, Azaria’s parents and her three siblings, including 29-year-old sister Kahlia who was born in prison, collected her new death certificate, reported the AP. via USA Today
