20-Ft Great White Shark Tagged Off Cape Cod: All east-facing ocean beaches along Cape Cod, Mass., have been closed after a 20-foot female great white shark was tagged near Chatham Harbor. The shark was tagged by the Cape Cod Shark Hunters, who have tagged 18 great white sharks this summer. On Thursday alone, the team spotted six great whites off Chatham, including two — a 16-footer and a 20-footer — that had not been previously tagged.
The sharks are tagged with sensors that can be tracked by satellite and also communicate wirelessly with buoys out in the harbor. When the shark swims near a buoy, the signal from the tag is picked up. Niko Chaprales, captain of the Cape Cod Shark Hunters' boat the Ezyduzit, said his crew has spotted 40 different sharks this summer. Swimmers have been advised to stay at least 300 yards away from seals, who populate the area and are a favorite meal of great whites.
