UPDATE: Discovery News' Kasey-Dee Gardner followed up with Florida scientists on what the Creature of the Canals could be. Listen to the answers here.

Thanks to our friends over at UnderwaterTimes.com for pointing this one out. A resident of Madeira Beach, Fla., says there's a 30-foot sea monster swimming up and down the canal out back of his house.

Russ Sittlow calls the monster "Normandy Nessie" because he lives on Normandy Road.

Local authorities reckon the monster is actually a manatee, but Sittlow strongly disagrees, though he did hedge a little on the monster bit when reporter Rod Challenger asked.

"No, no, well, call a monster what you will, it's something different, it's something strange, it's something I've never seen in salt water," Sittlow said.

Sittlow also said there was another creature with the 30-foot monster that was smaller. Neighbors say they've also seen the monster swimming in the canal.
