Rare Turtle Eggs Crushed en Masse: A construction crew working on a Trinidad beach has inadvertently destroyed thousands of leatherback turtle eggs and newly hatched turtles, reports the AP in the Washington Post.
Bulldozers were diverting a beach-river that was threatening a hotel that thrives on people coming to watch the hatching of the endangered turtle eggs. The crew reportedly dug up too much of the beach, exposing crushed newborns and eggs to stray dogs and vultures, which ate them up.
“They had a very good meal. I was near tears. It was a disgusting mess,” said Sherwin Reyz of the Grand Riviere Environmental Organization, who helped save the hatchlings that were not injured by the overzealous dig. via Washington Post/AP
