Octopuses Outsmart Scientists: DNews Nugget

Octopuses Outsmart Scientists: Don't try and pull a fast one on an octopus.

That's what University of Cape Town (South Africa) learned when they tried to use a baited camera in False Bay to film underwater creatures.

The octopuses not only managed to open the carefully designed cannister and eat its contents, some even made off with some of the video camera equipment.

Fortunately, the camera recorded the culprits.

"We've had several pieces of equipment stolen. We've got it all on film," UCT research assistant Lauren de Vos told the Cape Times.

Not only did the underwater cameras capture the wily octopuses, the researchers also got footage of curious seals, a great white shark, an elephant fish — even a cormorant that had dived down to investigate.
