Moonlight Scares Bats:
Werewolves aren’t the only ones with lunar phobia, a new global survey found that a full moon scares bats into hiding.
After examining data on 26 species the study published in the journal Mammalian Biology found only one exception, that bats flying above the treetops continue to hunt even in bright moonlight. The other species decrease their activity, with those flying over water or beneath the forest canopy hiding the most during bright moonlit nights.
The reason why most bats prefer dark nights for hunting remains a mystery, but the biologists at the National Autonomous University of Mexico who conducted the study suspect bats are either protecting themselves from predation or have less opportunity to find prey during the full moon.
