Picking up a hitchhiker can be dangerous, especially if he's a black bear.

A young black bear rode into downtown Vancouver, Canada, in a garbage truck on Monday.

It is believed the bear hitched a ride from north Vancouver, said officer Alex Desjardins in the Vancouver Sun.

“It’s a vehicle equipped to load containers, so presumably, the bear was in the container and transferred into the truck,” Desjardins said. “The operator then conducted business in Vancouver -– either pick-up or drop-off –- and that’s when he noticed he had a bear in his truck.”

The year-and-a-half-old bear was rescued by a team of police officers. After shooting it with a tranquilizer dart, one brave police officer had to climb up and push the bear off the truck into a tarp held by other officers.

The bear was released in the upper Squamish Valley on Tuesday.
