Surfer Chuck Patterson just captured uncomfortably up close footage of a great white shark while in the water off of San Onofre state beach in Southern California.
Ken Peterson, communications director of The Monterey Bay Aquarium informs me that the shark is likely one that the aquarium's researchers tagged some time ago.
"The yellow-green object on the shark's left side is most likely the leader left behind when the electronic tag popped free," Peterson said.
To capture the footage, Patterson used a new camera mounted on a 10-foot-tall pole.
"I paddled out on my Hobie Stand up paddle board, 250 yards by myself, and within minutes a shark surprised me with a swing of his tail, almost knocking me into the water," Patterson writes. "The shark swam away and another 7' shark appeared and circled my board off and on for 12 minutes. It was an insane experience which i hope to enjoy again soon."
