Flesh-Eating Bug Killing Salmon: Nearly
40 percent of Atlantic salmon are being killed by a parasite, reports the Daily Mail.
The parasitic salmon
louse spreads within fish populations and eats their flesh. The researchers, from New Zealand, studied
thousands of tagged baby salmon released into the sea, half treated with parasiticide and half not.
After
a year, the fish were recovered and the researchers found that 39 percent had died. The parasiticide
helped, but was not a failsafe.
The study was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
