3 Mln Bees in Queens Backyard: A Queens
man was found to be keeping some 3 million bees in his backyard, reports NBCNews.com.
The bees were in
poor health since the man, Yi Gin Chen, kept taking their honey and leaving them with no food.
Andrew
Cote, president of the New York City Beekeepers Association, told NBC: "The bees were in terrible
condition. I'll be surprised if any of them survives the winter. He stripped them of all their honey. The
average weight of a hive at this time of the year would be at least 180 pounds, and these averaged 40
pounds. He took all of their honey and didn't leave any for them."
It's unclear whether Chen will face
charges for having so many bees, which were confiscated.
