Tree houses aren’t just for children anymore. In Sweden, the eco-friendly Treehotel offers a sanctuary in the trees for all ages.

Located in Harads, a village with a population of about 600, Treehotel is set inside a forest. The “treerooms” are elevated hotel rooms built on trees, giving you a view and experience like no other: miles of forest, the Lule river and an overlook of the valley. From Treehotel:

The inspiration for Treehotel is taken from the movie “The Tree Lover” by Jonas Selberg Augustsén. A tale of three men from the city who rediscover their roots by building a tree house together. “The Tree Lover” is a philosophical story about the tree’s importance to our people, both historically and culturally.

Each treeroom, ranging in size from 15 to 30 square meters, is unique from one another. Of 24 planned rooms, five were completed in 2010. The second phase will be finished in 2012. They were built minimizing their effects on the environment, using special materials and construction techniques. While the rooms are built on the tops of trees, none were chopped down in the process.

Environmental consideration led the hotel to choose Eco outdoor wood floor, which doesn’t contain any chemicals. All the rooms are insulated and come with underfloor heating and low-energy LED lighting. Electricity is supplied from local green hydroelectric power.

The rooms lack a sewage system and instead use combustion toilets powered by electricity, which incinerate waste at 600 degrees Celsius. Though there’s no sewage system, these toilets are odorless, according to Treehotel. In addition, bathrooms have water-efficient sinks, and showers are located in a separate building.
