When travelers finally board a plane, they just want to take off and arrive at their destination, not spend five minutes listening to the crew talk about in-flight safety. More than likely, they already know the drill.
But Air New Zealand’s new safety video is completely worth watching — even if you’re not on a plane (right now for instance). Showing pride in its national heritage (or Hollywood celebrity for its picturesque landscapes), the airline’s video makes use of J.R.R. Tolkien’s characters from “The Hobbit” to teach us about safety belts, inflatable vests and rules about electronics.
You can spot long flowing hair, pointy ears, Gollum and even Peter Jackson with the ring (1:40) in the video above. What a clever way to engage tired travelers who just want to tune out.
