Pilots Running Out in U.S.: Fewer new
pilots than retiring pilots means U.S. airlines will run out of pilots in the foreseeable future if
nothing is done to attract new blood, reports Time.com.
Pay cuts, exhausting flight schedules and an
increase in the number of hours a newly hired pilot needs all mean there are fewer trained pilots now than
anytime in the past 50 years.
To make matter tougher, foreign airlines are hiring away U.S. pilots with
far better pay packages.
“We are about four years from a solution, but we are only about six months away
from a problem,” Kit Darby, a consultant, told the Wall Street Journal, according to Time.com.
The FAA’s
head of flight standards, John Allen, told the Journal that there wasn't anything in place to handle this
problem.
