63-Year-Old Swimmer Pulled From Water During Cuba to Florida Attempt

In her fourth attempt to become the first person to swim between Cuba and Florida without a shark cage, 63-year-old Diana Nyad was forced from the water after 60 hours of swimming. Fully alert, Nyad continued to ask when she could get back in as her support crew pulled her onto the boat ahead of an incoming storm.

“I want full transparency that I was out,” she said once in the boat, “but I have plenty left in me and I want to go on.”

Unfortunately, it was not to be. Mark Sollinger, the operations director for the support team, explained that a series of very large swells were making conditions dangerous not just for Nyad but for the entire crew.

Overnight, Nyad had sustained more than nine jellyfish stings and had begun to suffer from exhaustion as well as swollen eyes and lips.
