It's hard to tell from the pictures and videos whether the dogs that competed in this weekend's surfing championship were psyched, anxious or just curious about the weird things their owners make them do. And some of the wipeouts look intense.
But winner Buddy, a 14-year old Jack Russell Terrier, certainly seemed cool and calm on Sunday as he surfed wave after wave. It was his fifth title at the sixth annual Helen Woodward Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon in Del Mar, Calif. With his win, Buddy earned another distinction: He became the first inductee of the Surf Dog Hall of Fame.
Eighty canines entered this year's competition, which raised more than $100,000 for orphaned pets. Dogs competed in one of four weight classes.
About two minutes in to the video above, which was posted on YouTube by SoCal Beaches Magazine, you can see Buddy expertly shifting his weight back on the board to avoid flipping or nose-diving in the whitewater of a crashing wave. A little later, he practically surfs a pipe all the way into shore. And the crowd goes wild.
Visit the Surf Dog-A-Thon Facebook page for more pictures, including images of the costume contest. There, you can also learn more about next year’s competition.
This was likely Buddy's last year of competition, UPI reported. Maybe next year, it'll be your pup's turn to take home the top trophy.
